Children are a very special part of our church because we believe them to be special to God. Children’s ministries at HBC are committed to assisting parents in their God-given responsibility in raising their children in a way that is honouring to God (Ephesians 6:4). At the heart of children’s ministry is age appropriate bible teaching to help children come to a true knowledge of God and to put their trust in Jesus Christ.

First Steps Crèche

Ages: Birth to age 3

On Sunday morning, a warm, safe environment is made available in our lower lounge area for babies, toddlers, and their parents. Alternatively, there is a cry room available upstairs (overlooking the auditorium). Parents are welcome to stay in the crèche or attend the main worship service. Crèche is open from 9.30am.

Junior Church

Junior Church gathers in the Clarkson Hall on Sunday mornings for a time of singing, notices, prayer, and a collection for children that we sponsor through World Vision. Children then split into different age groups and enjoy a lesson from the Bible.

Midway through the morning service (during the school term) children aged 3 to 13 are dismissed for Junior Church. If you prefer, your children are also welcome to stay in the main auditorium during this time.

  1. STEPPING STONES: age 3-Year 2. Meets in the Howick Baptist Kindergarten rooms for an interactive time of bible story lesson followed by a craft project that reflects the lesson.
  2. JUNIOR CLASS: Years 3-4.
  3. MIDDLE CLASSES: Years 5-6.
  4. INTERMEDIATES: Years 7-8.

Teaching curriculum

We use age appropriate material from Children Desiring God Ministries. These curriculum emphasise that man is not the key player in history; God is the engineer of all life, and His purposes are fulfilled throughout history. Each curriculum is a 40 week study that purposefully presents God as the main character in each lesson, rather than dwelling on man and man’s needs. Therefore, each lesson focuses on the magnificent character of the One who can satisfy all our longings. Showing children the greatness of God gives them a basis to respond to Him. This material presents a great God who is worthy to be admired and imitated.

On the last Sunday of each month, the intermediate age children remain in the church auditorium, participating in the corporate worship service.
